The localization of sodium in the teleost cornea.

چکیده
T.he localization of sodium in the avian salt gland by means of an electron-dense precipitate of sodium pyroantimonate was first used by Komnick and Komnick. Recently, Kaye and associates utilized this method to localize sodium in rabbit corneal endothelial cells—normal and ouabain treated. Zadunaisky used modifications of this method to locate the specific sites of sodium ion in the membranous system of skeletal muscle. Hartmann also applied this sodium specific stain to localize sodium ion in cells of the cerebral cortex. To verify the precipitate as sodium pyroantimonate, Hartmann utilized electron diffraction procedures. The fresh water teleost cornea is impermeable to sodium ion and has a low order of water movement from epithelium to endothelium, despite the presence of an osmotic gradient which favors water movement into the cornea and sodium movement out of it. In adapting to its aquatic environment, the teleost has maintained a high total corneal sodium content. The

Research Article: Feed comparison and feeding ecology in five sympatric teleost species of the northern Oman Sea
Investigating the relations and mechanisms of coexistence among sympatric species is essential to comprehend their ecological roles in the food webs. In the present study, the diet and trophic interactions of 5 abundant teleost species coexisting in the northern Oman Sea were examined using stomach contents analyses. The cumulative prey curves showed that the sample size of each studied species...
متن کاملKeratoconus experimentally produced in mice using collagenase
Introduction: Keratoconus is a relatively common disease of cornea in which structural changes within the cornea cause it to thin and change to a conical shape and scar at the central portion of cornea. So far, few methods and drug treatments were introduced due to both lack of accepted animal models to induce experimental keratoconus and limitation of research in human considering ethical issu...
متن کاملTaxonomic status of six populations of the Gobiids (Teleost, Gobiidae) in the southern Caspian Sea basin using COI gene
Morphological similarities of the populations and species of the genus Ponticola in the southern Caspian Sea make their identification difficult based on the provided keys. Molecular markers are used as a supplementary tools to better understanding of the fishes’ taxonomic statues. This study was conducted to understand taxonomic statues of gobiids from 6 rivers (Siah, Zaringol, Babol, Tajan, S...
متن کاملExamination of the immunohistochemical localization and gene expression by RT-PCR of the oxytocin receptor in diabetic and non-diabetic mouse testis
Objective(s): The aim of this study was to determine Oxytocin receptor (OTR) gene expression and localization in diabetic and non-diabetic mouse testes by RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry, respectively. Materials and Methods: In this study, 18 male BALB/c mice (8–12 weeks old) were used and divided into three groups: diabetic, sham, and control. Streptozotocin (STZ) was applied to the diabetic g...
متن کاملProperties of corneal receptors in a teleost fish.
Corneal receptors have not previously been identified in lower vertebrates. The present study describes the properties of trigeminal ganglion corneal receptors in a teleost fish, the rainbow trout (Oncoryhnchus mykiss). Out of 27 receptors, 7 were polymodal nociceptors, 6 were mechanothermal nociceptors, 2 were mechanochemical receptors and the largest group, 12, were only responsive to mechani...
